  • Can we all support Obama on this?

Obama speaks out again on the need for a playoff.

    http://www.cnn.com/2009/POLITICS/01/...all/index.html

"It would add three extra weeks to the season," Obama said in a "60 Minutes" interview just after his election. "You could trim back on the regular season. I don't know any serious fan of college football who has disagreed with me on this. So, I'm going to throw my weight around a little bit. I think it's the right thing to do."
"There is no creature more arrogant than a self-righteous libertarian on the web, am I right? Those folks are just intolerable."
"It's no secret that the great American pastime is no longer baseball. Now it's sanctimony." -- Guy Periwinkle, The Nix.

    Yes.

Bottom line is it makes it less, not more likely, IMO, that BYU or Utah are ever NC, but I still think it is the best way to go.
    PLesa excuse the tpyos.

      You think?

I only agree with your statement because there is no way that BYU wins that many big games in a row to win the NC in a playoff format.

truthfully, it makes it tougher for everyone....another reason why many college presidents don't want to do it.

when texas almost ran the gauntlet of 4 ranked teams in a row this regular season, it was a huge deal.

A 12 team playoff is almost replicating that all over again.....after a challenging regular season.

Imagine if Florida had had to defeat Oklahoma AND Utah AND USC. Would they still have come out #1? Perhaps, but it's certainly a steeper hill to climb (or insert some appropriate metaphor here).

Well on the flip side Utah would have had to defeat Alabama, USC and Florida

Or USC defeating Penn State, Utah and Florida.

Someone would come out on top.

LOL! Short of peace in the ME, few things would make me happier than if Obama were to bring about a legit college football championship playoff.

beating coaches poll #4 Utah would be impressive, but not as impressive as Coaches and Harris poll #2 USC.

Sadly I cannot for I have sworn a blood oath to oppose all that Obama supports, regardless of whether it's in my interest or not.

I may be a little optimistic here, but if you can get Obama and the heartland of conservatism- Texas- to agree on something, there's a possibility that "change" will occur. Add in the fact that that the largest state in the union, California, hates the system, and you've got the two largest states clamoring for a playoff.

The only two states that may be against a playoff is Oklahoma and Ohio since their teams seem to take advantage of the system when their results on the field against elite competition wouldn't otherwise afford them the opportunities they get. Florida knows it can kick ass in a playoff system also, so they don't care.

The BCS conferences and school presidents like the BCS. They make more money now than they used to and the popularity of college football has actually grown since the inception of the BCS. Mike Tranghese, the commissioner of the Big East conference made the salient point that no one would have cared about WV v. Pitt in December 2007 without the BCS. Yet the game meant a heck of a lot because of the BCS. I watched that game while I was putting up my Christmas tree last year.

While Tranghese' statement may be true, it would still be true if playoff spots were on the line if a playoff spot were on the line. I have stated on this forum that I support an 8 team, or at most, a 10 team playoff format because I think there's something to the argument that the regular season is huge in college football because of the relatively small, or even nonexistant, margin for error that exists for the teams with national title and BCS bowl aspirations. WV v. Pitt in 2007 still means something with a limited playoff. In addition, so do even more games. USC games versus Notre Dame and UCLA to finish off the year mean a whole lot more if USC is looking to get into the playoff.

I don't pretend to know enough about anit-trust law to understand if the BCS is really in violation of it. I know they were scared enough of reprisals from congress a few years ago to add a fifth game and give relatively easy access to a non-BCS team every year. I also know that there is no way in hell that Miami could do what it did in the late 70s through early 80s and build a program from relative obscurity and become a national title contender. The same goes for FSU, and probably for Penn State dating back to the late 60s through early to mid 70s. They were all independents at the time of their relative rise in the rankings. No independent could do what they did now. No one seriously thinks that Utah is in the same position as these schools despite having two undefeated seasons in five years and two BCS bowl wins, because Utah is the MWC and the MWC is non-BCS. Every coach from a BCS conference that is competing with BYU and Utah for recruits tells the recruits that the MWC is non-BCS and if they go to one of those schools, they have no shot of competing at the highest level.

I know that the Pac-10, Big 10, Big 12, ACC and SEC basically have all of the programs that have big, dedicated fanbases and win on a consistent basis, with the possible exception of BYU. But the BCS puts a huge impediment in front of any program wishing to do what Miami and FSU did in the relatively recent past.
Part of it is based on academic grounds. Among major conferences, the Pac-10 is the best academically, largely because of Stanford, Cal and UCLA. “Colorado is on a par with Oregon,” he said. “Utah isn’t even in the picture.”
