  • My Garage Project

I'm gearing up to start my garage project. A couple years ago I drew up some scale drawings of what I wanted to do, but now I can't find them so I'm starting from scratch.

One of the things I really regret about the other work I've done on our house is not getting BEFORE pictures so this time I took plenty. Here are a couple shots today in the cold of my small, ugly garage.

It's a pretty blank canvas, and over the next couple months I hope to make some progress on painting, shelving, cabinets, etc. I'll post that progress in this thread.

Good luck! Surfah and I surprised his parents with making over the garage while they were gone. We had a heater that we "procured" from work and ran electric, painted, a few cabinets, shelving units, drywall work and sealed the floor, remodeled the stairs and added a handrail, etc. It was a helluva-lot of work. It was well worth it to see the reactions.

I am going to be doing some upgrades on my garage this winter as well.

I will be watching this with interest. I have similar unfulfilled dreams for my garage. Maybe you will inspire me to get it done this year.

Man, I would die just to have that little cut out for storage like you have. I'm going to need some major shelving systems to make my garage functional as a storage space.
Ain't it like most people, I'm no different. We love to talk on things we don't know about.

One of the first 'orders of business' in our new house was to do something with the garage. It is a one car garage with 11 foot ceilings. So, we put in a loft. It's a pretty handy storage area.

That's a good use of space.

I have almost completed my organization and clean-up of my garage. I also built a storage platform in the attic to allow more space in the garage. I will post pics this weekend.

How is your project going kccoug?

My Saturday two weeks ago was spent building this:

The nail gun I borrowed gave out after about 5 nails, so I was left screwing the thing together with a 9.5v cordless drill. That ended up taking an extra couple hours, at least, with all the pre-drilling and battery charging.

Also, Mrs. Donut didn't like how the OSB looked/felt, so we ended up going with more expensive (and totally unnecessary) MDF. All told, it cost us just under $100. The shelves are 8' long and 2' deep. In the spring I plan to add a work bench with some smaller shelving.

It looks good D-Hole. You are a wise man to just say, "yes ma'am". I came across 3 solid doors that I was able to get for free if I just get went to pick them up. I built the shelves around them on one side of the garage and stick framed the other side with a small bench (that conveniently collects a bunch of shiz).

                        Donut,

Did you attach to the wall? If so, care to show photos?

I did attach to the wall, though I don't have photos to show how. The explanation is simple enough, though.

As you can see from the picture the vertical supports on the front are evenly spaced--right edge, center, left edge. In contrast, the vertical supports against the wall are not evenly spaced, but are centered on the studs in the adjacent wall. (The center support on the rear is about 3" to the right of the center of the shelves, and the far right support is about 3" to the left of the end of the shelves). I screwed the back vertical supports into the wall stud in 4 places on the support:at the top, bottom, and in two places in between.

Also, the vertical supports in the rear rest on a foundation lip (you can see the curb in the back behind the propane tank), so their individual lengths were cut to accommodate that extra height.

Once the vertical supports were attached to the wall, I drilled the support cleats into them at the appropriate heights (In lieu of using metal L brackets, I used 2" long pieces of 2x4 as cleating, screwed with two screws into the vertical supports).

Once I had the back vertical supports attached to the wall and the cleats attached to the supports, I rested the lowest shelf on the wall cleats and slipped the middle support in for balance (I had already screwed the cleats onto the front vertical supports while they were flat on the ground). Then I slipped the left end support in, checked that it was level in all directions, and screwed through it into the 2x4 framing of the shelf. Once I had all three supports in place with the first shelf, it was only a matter of lifting the next shelf into place, leveling, and screwing it to secure it to the vertical supports.

Donut's garage is beautiful, I was envious. Doubly so considering that I had just the week before cleaned out my garage and it was still not as pristine as his.
