  • FYI...Tom Holmoe......psst.....

With the scheduling of respectable has-beens like Oklahoma, is it safe to assume that the Big 12/SEC cream-puff philosophy has been abandoned?

If so, USC has openings on its schedule.

2010...Sep 18 (if SC decides to go for the 13th game, if not they will use this as a second bye week, similar to this season)

2011...Sep 3 (season opener for SC)

2012...Sep 1 (season opener for SC)

BYU and SC are now clearly competing for some of the same polys. SC's ability to recruit them is only going to continue to increase (I am assuming John Martinez is poly and not hispanic). BYU should be all over this. I would say even to the tune of a 1 for 2 (if that is what it took to secure the series).

    Tom, pick up the phone!

We didn't need 2-1 last time why should we now?

I don't think SC would want to come to Provo 2 times and us go there 1. I'd definately go for that though!

I'd love to see a BYU-USC series again. We might get smoked but at least we would have something to look forward to. Playing Northern Iowa, or whoever it was we played.

The price of USC has gone up. Those original games were scheduled before the Carson Heisman year.

You are probably right, but SC doesn't play enough non-BCS schools to know for sure. They did a home and home with Hawaii, for example. They are opening with SJSU next season as a one-off to fill the slot. Most of their OOC is BCS. Upcoming OOC in the next 4 seasons include @Ohio State, Virginia, home and home with Syracuse, and of course the annual Notre Dame games. Also, the aforementioned SJSU and @Hawaii.

My point is, there is a logical reason for BYU to seek out games against USC. They are going to continue to lose polys to SC....and the more polys BYU loses, the less likely that the team firesides will have good singers. Also, who is going to eat all that bulk mac salad and drink all that kava? Holmoe needs to consider these things.

This is the BYU71 approach. and he is right.

BYU's schedule this coming season is awesome. That is how it should be every year.

Totally agree. Although playing SC type of teams may be a bit much for BYU. I'd dump the Northern Iowa type for mid to lower leverl Big 10 and Big 12. The Minnesota, Iowa, Iowa St. etc. We should be able to win the home games for sure and on the road if we are any good we should be able to win those as well. Going into SC the chances of winning are slim to say the least!

One thing I respect about USC, is they're one of a small handful of D-I teams left that have never played a D-IAA team nor do they ever intend to.

A lot of it is because they can fill their schedule each and every week. It's not like USC tries to schedule a Div. I team and they say no so they have to scramble and can only find a last minute replacement.

it has not always been that way. SC had a 20 year dry spell for serious title contention. that kind of dry spell is usually reserved for things like deserts, Ban Roll-On, and frigid women.

Oh, well. You snooze, you lose.

SC just inked a home and home with Minnesota for 2010 and 2011.

That still leaves an opening for 2012, Tom.

The cool thing is that the roadie to Minnesota will be the first game played in their new stadium. Anyone ever been to a Minnesota game? Should be interesting, although not sure if there is anything fun about the roadie itself.

You can hit up Mall of America! After all, what is a vacation without hitting up a mall? And what better mall to hit up than Mall of America!

That SC was willing to go to Minnesota (unless they have a great player from there, or there is a super stud coming up next year from there) and BYU claims to keep missing on home and homes with people, well it speaks volumes.

I think it is a good OOC schedule. Minnesota is a solid program. Might not be akin to scheduling Texas or Florida, but it certainly is very respectable. Especially given the proximity of the date....at this stage, most big schools would have invited some D2 sacrificial lamb to come play a home game for a nice cash payout. Instead, SC continues its policy of scheduling solid OOC games while the SEC continues to schedule 3 or 4 horrible opponents a year, along with 8 home games.

2010 OOC: Hawaii, Virginia, Minnesota, Notre Dame
2011 OOC: Minnesota, Syracuse, Notre Dame

                          that ain't bad, folks.

I agree, I have been arguing with my brother for years that BYU should schedule Minnesota, Iowa State, Kansas etc. Most years it would be a game BYU could win, and if you happen to catch them in a good year it ends up looking like a good win.

that ain't good either. Just saying. those schedules with the inherent disrespect that the P10 get, does not set up the arguement for a one loss SC to be in the NC game.
