  • From SoCalPat on Utefans Will byu be marginal in 2010?

They will be good next year. Might even win the MWC. I think they have as good a shot as any team, because they'll have the favorable schedule and senior QB. Offensive line? If there's one position BYU does a good job of reloading at, it's there.

But 2010 is shaping up to be god-awful on so many levels for BYU. Nearly one-third of their scholarship players graduate. No Hall, Unga, Collie, Pitta, Jorgensen, etc. The front 7 will be crushed by graduation, and the best prospects for BYU there will be either in the mission field or will be just returning.

I think this is when Bronco's recruiting efforts and landing marginal talents finally catches up to him. Outside of Jorgensen, who fell in his lap, I don't think Bronco's recruited one player on the defensive side of the ball who's come remotely close to all-MWC honors.

I'll gladly break out the shovel then, but until then, I think most of you should remember that fortune can be fleeting in the MWC. We lose several key components that just can't be replaced overnight.

2010 scares the piss out of me. Bronco will likely experience very Crowton like treatment, perhaps even worse as Gary never tried to be a GA. The growing CB-type fan will be content again if BYU is better than Utah next year and wins the MWC, who isn't happy with 5 straight Vegas Bowls?

With non-conf games against Washington in Sark's second year and @ Florida State, @ TCU, @ Utah, it will be a 4+ loss team. That is being generous.

maybe..we will see. BTW I guess he thinks that Unga turns pro after next year? I don't know if I agree with that. I don't think he is good enough to go early.

Anytime you replace a quarterback at a school other than USC it is a big question mark.

To me I wonder why Unga isn't leaving now? What is he going to prove that to NFL people that they don't already know? I am glad he is coming back though.

From Socalpat in 2005 after the Fiesta Bowl:

"Utah is now a national power, BYU will never be relevant in college football again, they will struggle be above .500 for a long time."

3 straight 10 win seasons later he has not retracted any of it.

Let me also say that how can you judge Broncos recruiting classes when he is just getting his first class home off of their missions?

2010 will likely be a dropoff. On the other hand, I recall having some doubts about BYU's future success after losing All-Americans Steve Young and Gordon Hudson, along with players like Casey Tiumalu, Eddie Stinnett, Waymon Hamilton, and a few of the usual good but no-name receivers (Pendleton, Eddo, etc.). The team managed to recover with a new quarterback, and 1984 turned out to be a good year. Get your January 2011 BCS Championship tickets now.

What is your opinion of 2010? Does byu have a ton of talent on Missions?

If Bronco has really never had a great defensive player what ar X man and Manti doing even considering BYU?
When a true genius appears, you can know him by this sign: that all the dunces are in a confederacy against him.

Yes I think BYU has some talent on missions. It all depends on who plays QB for BYU. If we start Heaps as a true freshman we are probably in trouble.

But most thought 2007 would be a huge dropoff from 2006 and both teams won 11 games. Remember in 2007 we were replacing our top receiver, the schools 2nd leading passer, and all time leading rusher.

I'm impressed. This guy knows more about the 2010 BYU team than I knew about the 2008 Utah team.

He's more optimistic about BYU's 2009 OL than I am.

I haven't thought much about 2010. You rarely have a real strong idea what the team will look like in two years.

QB: probably Riley Jensen. Maybe he'll be good maybe not.

RB: Harvey would be a senior, but good chance he could leave early. We'll have to see if someone steps up. Nobody expected Harvey to do what he did. And we could go JC after next year.

WR: Jacobsen and Chambers likely the go to guys with plenty of others waiting in the wings.

                        TE: somebody always steps up

OL: next year will be down and 2010 should be an improvement on next year based on guys returning with experience

DL: Putnam, Afutiti, Manamelaenemanuumasomething, plus other guys plus new recruits

LB: really questionable, lot of guys in the pipeline but I'm not sure about mission plans

CB: maybe by 2010 we'll finally look good here with Bradley and Buckner

S: lot of guys here depending on mission plans

bottom line: concern but only due to unproven players which is the case for almost any team looking two years out

JC's are totally worthless. See Matt Asiata and David Reed.

Missionaries not on 2008 roster that will play in 2010 that have potential to be impact players down the road:

                            Tyler Beck LB
                            Robbie Buckner CB

                            I may be missing some.
