  • Pac 10 expansion talk heating up

    http://espn.go.com/blog/pac10/post/_...ider-expansion

Utah + Colorado the most likely scenario. Utah + TCU possible.

Salt/Lake Denver market addition attractive, so is expanding the footprint to Texas.

    Television contract renewal draws near.

    Two unfortunate hurdles for Utah

Programs need to be an academic and athletic match. That means admission standards and research accreditation are issues. On the athletic side, it's not just about football. How strong is the entire athletic department?
Looks like no dice for SLC.

Utah can raise admission standards as easily as it got rid of the ban on liquor by the drink to get the Olympics. In the blink of an eye. It's overdue, and something the academic heavyweights would totally support. Nothing could be better for for Utah State too than to make admissions competitive at Utah. It's been moving in that direction anyway.

Not to mention the embarrassment of being ranked third as a sports media draw in the Beehive State.

I thought Utah's entire athletic department was strong. It's has had strong skiiing and women's gymnastics and M and W basketball. What else is there? There's a baseball team that's okay, I think.

There are some very strong Ski teams to compete against in the PAC 10.

Are there no ski teams in the Pac 10? Every state has great or reasonably good resorts.

The Pac 10 won't be very impressed when it finds out the Utes' dirty secret.

The PAC thinks it will nab the SLC media market, when in reality, 70% of the state hates the University of Utah, most people would rather watch the Jazz, and the team can't even attract full crowds in years that it makes deep NCAA runs.

I think it was you that informed us all of the tremendous level of unpopularity the Utes endure in the State of Utah.

Why would the PAC want that? 70% of the state hates this school!

Not after they're in the Pac 10.

Good point. Flagstaff is a great recruiting hotbed for the UofA and ASU ski teams. Good call.

Perhaps you are unaware of the PAC's athletic interests in sports such as track and field, tennis, soccer, water polo, swimming/diving, baseball, softball, rugby, golf, etc.

There is a reason the PAC has won more collegiate national championships than any other conference in the country....it competes at the highest level in all sports. Stanford, UCLA, USC have the most national championships of any schools in the country.

This is from SC's page alone. I am sure Cal, UCLA, Stanford have similar bios:

                        Trojans in the Olympics

                        • USC has a reputation and long tradition of nurturing Olympic athletes. From the 1904 Summer Olympics through the 2004 games, 375 Trojan athletes have competed in the Games, taking home 112 gold medals (with at least 1 gold in every summer Olympics since 1912), 64 silver and 58 bronze.
                        • There have been more Trojans in the Olympics than from any other university in the world - if USC were its own nation in the Olympics, it would rank tied for 11th in the world in total gold medals earned.[1].
                        • USC sent 35 athletes to the 2004 Athens Olympics and won 17 medals: eight golds, five silvers and four bronzes.
                        • Senior Communication student Rebecca Soni won an Olympic Gold Medal for swimming the 200 m Breaststroke during the 2008 Beijing Olympics setting a World Record. She also received a Silver Medal in 100 m Breaststroke and 4x100m Medly Relay.

LOL. We can field teams in these fringe sports if we don't already. Utah has the nut licked: outsized research, football, and basketball success. The rest is trimmings.

And with that you managed to leave out the school that is hosting 3 of the next 5 NCAA Track and Field Championships, located in Track Town, USA.

sorry, forgot to mention that many PAC 10 schools act as hosts to the greatness of other schools.
