I think BYU would have a better BCS shot if they had beat TCU than if they had beat FSU."In conclusion, let me give a shout-out to dirty sex. What a great thing it is" - Northwestcoug

You would be wrong.Originally posted by SonOFpeRdiTioN View PostTrue or false: if BYU had defeated Florida State, they would be up at least 4 spots from #14 to #10 (above 10-2 Iowa) and they would be playing in a BCS bowl this year? I say true, which makes that FSU lost particularly painful.

There's a rule that no more than two teams from any one conference can be offered BCS bids. The teams from non-qualifying conferences are pretty much regarded as all from one imaginary conference known as "mid-major" (or something equally pejorative), and though this rule doesn't explicitly apply to them, it would almost certainly be applied in practice.Originally posted by SonOFpeRdiTioNMy question goes farther than that. The question is not would BYU get the bids in place of Boise or TCU, but would BYU also get the bid in addition to Boise & TCU's bids. In other words, Would BYU have edged out 10-2 Iowa? If not, why not? Why wouldn't a #10 ranked 11-1 BYU team get a BCS bid?
This is the first year that even two mid-majors have been offered spots. The notion of three being invited is almost laughable.

you're absolutely right. The BCS would jump at the chance to have BYU, TCU, and Boise in one year. If only Houston had finished out strong, too, maybe we could have knocked Florida out of the Sugar Bowl.Originally posted by SonOFpeRdiTioNI beg to differ that it is laughable. It is by no means "certainly be applied in practice". MWC and WAC would have to legally be considered as separate conferences. There'd be quite an uproar for any unequal treatment like that.

You're contradicting yourself there.Originally posted by Maximus View PostBYU could eaisly have been chosen over BSU. Would they have? Probably not.
Both. The BCS folks would never allow a third non-BCS team to play in their games and BYU would have been this year's Rudolph.I would be wrong that 1) BYU would've made it to a #10 BCS ranking, or that2) a #10 BCS ranked 11-1 BYU would've edged out Iowa for a BCS bowl, or 3)both?
I agree with whomever it was that said that BYU would have had a better chance had they beaten TCU rather than FSU. That would have left Boise as the only undefeated non-BCS team and BYU would have had a better chance for beating TCU."Socialism is a philosophy of failure, the creed of ignorance and the gospel of envy; its inherent virtue is the equal sharing of misery." - Winston Churchill
