  • Olive Oil

I bought some olive oil the other day and, against my better judgment went with a generic brand...in a plastic bottle.

I don't know if it's just because I've never gotten olive oil in a plastic bottle before, but it seems like the plastic affects the flavor; or maybe it's just that I bought the cheap stuff?

Any olive oil snobs on the board? Did I commit a serious faux pas?

      Was it promiscuous?

That may have been the problem.

Yes, you absolutely did mess this one up. Olive Oil is one of those products that generally costs what it's worth. Expect to spend $15-20 for 16 oz. of "good" olive oil, and $30+ for "really good" olive oil. And I would recommend only buying Spanish olive oil.

Wow, Tim, you spend a LOT on olive oil. We buy Kalamata Extra Virgin Olive Oil. It comes from Greece. It comes in a 1 liter bottle (33.8 Fl.oz). It is a first cold press oil (which is what I have always heard is the best oil). It is also cheap (at Trader Joe's), so you can use it on EVERYTHING, and it tastes great.

I have tasted better olive oils in nice restaurants, but this stuff is really nice general purpose oil to toss with a little cabbage, vinegar and salt and pepper (which is the salad I just prepared to eat with Faith's Brazilian-style red beans and rice). Mmmmmm!

Does it come in a glass or plastic bottle?

I've been reading up on it a bit, and you're right. I should have been more careful. Interesting to discover that only about 40% of the olive oils out there that say they are extra virgin are actually extra virgin.

Surprisingly, California makes some fantastic olive oil. I'd put Pasolivo, which is made in California, up against any Spanish made Olive Oil.

How did you go from buying olive oil in plastic bottles to putting Pasolivo up against any Spanish made oil within less than a few hours? Remarkable.

Olive oil in a plastic bottle was a first time (and last time) experiment. I have in the past generally just picked up the best (most expensive) olive oil I could find in the grocery store and called it good. This time I got wondering if it really made any difference. I never bothered to really do much research on olive oil. Turns out it does make a difference.

I made a quick run over to World Market to get some decent Olive Oil (no way was I going to use the plastic bottle crap) and discovered Pasolivo. It is by far the best tasting olive oil I have ever consumed.

What's the difference between extra virgin olive oil and one that's been hammered a few times?

according to YardTime, I guess the taste is different?

The acidity....which affects the taste. Extra virgin olive oil will have a much lower acidity and better flavor, which makes it more preferred when the olive oil will be used on cold foods like salad.

As mentioned earlier, just because you go to the store and see a bottle labeled extra virgin olive oil, it doesn't mean you will actually be getting extra virgin olive oil as defined by the IOOC.

Oh....and when it says "Imported from Italy," look closer. Odds are only a very small portion of the olive oil came from Italy.
