Perhaps lost in the craziness of Saturday’s 26-23 overtime win over Utah for BYU was the fact that Cougars tight end Dennis Pitta became the NCAA record-holder for career receiving yards for a tight end.
Reader James Robertson points out that Pitta now has 2,856 career receiving yards. According to the NCAA’s Web site, the previous high was set by Louisville’s Ibn Green, who has 2,830 career receiving yards from 1996-99.
A candidate for the Mackey Award, which goes to the top tight end in the country, Pitta will learn on Dec. 10 whether he wins that honor.
For now, though, it appears he can say no tight end in NCAA Football Bowl Subdivision (Division I-A) has ever had more receving yards than Pitta.
Pitta passed Austin Collie as BYU’s all-time leading pass-catcher last Saturday and now has 216. Louisville’s Ibn had 217, so Pitta can obviously break that record in the bowl game.
