  • The Scalley Apology

It sounds like I was the last person to know that Morgan Scalley made an account on CB and apologized after called BYU fans "pricks" after the rivalry game a few years go. I can't stop laughing about that. That is like having a US politician state that all muslims are terrorists and then call up the Taliban headquarters to apologize.

I am sure he had good intentions, but wow...

It was enough to get the CB fatwa lifted, so probably a good move on his part.

I don't see a reason for Scalley to feel like he needs to apologize, and I don't see a reason for Max either.
So Russell...what do you love about music? To begin with, everything.

I know the Scalley family. I was told that Morgan simply felt bad about what he said to his teammates about BYU's footballers and that his rash statement got out to the whole world in the documentary. He is an active RM and a good, solid guy. The best kind of folk, IMO. So Morgan went to a place where he thought most BYU fans would see his apology, and he apologized. Like Max, Morgan was a young guy at the time. Seems pretty simple and understandable to me.

I remember in the initial apology post that he included his telephone number if anyone wanted to call and talk to him. Luckily, CJF knew Morgan Scalley and like him as a person and quickly removed his number.

I spoke to Morgan about this. His orignial post included his phone number so I removed it at the time. He reposted it without the number a little later. I am a Highland grad and have known the Scalley family for many many years. When I spoke to Morgan he felt badly about the language he used. He felt like he should be an example for the Church and was embarrassed that he used that language. I thought it was a classy thing to do. In 2004 I was living in Phoenix and worked the hospitality room for Utah during the Fiesta Bowl week. I had a chance to spend a lot of time with the Scalley family. He's an impressive stand up guy.

I'm a hack. I hit reply and then took a phone call.

I knew the Scalley family in high school. All really good people.

Am I the only one here who thinks he could call someone, or lots of people, "pricks" and still be a good upstanding guy without an apology?

No. I thought it was funny. He didn't need to apologize and that's why I removed his post. I didn't want a bunch of people calling his home giving him crap for something he didn't need to apologize for.

No kidding. The juxtaposition of political correctness run amok and the lack of civility in much of public discourse is quite interesting.

So we have a situation where people are saying harsher things while at the same time having to apologize more than they should have to.

                      And so it goes.

I am sure you are not the only one.

Keep in mind that CB wasn't the only venue that he issued an apology on. The point was that he wanted to spread the word as much as possible.

I am a little curious--what was the real motivation for Scalley's apology? Because he was afraid he hurt some feelings? Or he was a bad example of a Mormon? I have more respect for the former, less if he's just concerned about his image.

It's been a few years but if I remember the conversations correctly, Morgan was preparing his lesson for his deacons and realized he had done something he would teach them not to do. It bothered him. He made the post to apologize. I called him when I saw it a couple of hours later to let him know I took it down. He was at church. He called me when he got home and said he could not in good conscience give a talk at a fireside that evening without apologizing. So he posted again without his number. I don't think he was worried about his image as much as he was worried about being hypocritical to kids. Morgan was about as humble of a kid as I've ever met. He comes from a very good family and I think he really regretted bringing bad press to them, the U, and the Church. As mild as that bad press was. Again, it's been 5 years so I could be remembering incorrectly some of the details.
