  • ESPN reporting that Bobby Bowden will announce his retirement Tuesday.......

He is truly one of the great ones, to bad he hung on so long and diminished his legacy.

I heard just yesterday that he was telling the university that he wanted to stay for one more year. I guess they didn't share that sentiment.

They said you can stay but Jimbo Fisher will make all decisions. He said nevermind.

Sure, you can stay. We'll drive you out on a golf cart to start the game, you can wave to the fans, and then we'll park you next to the mist machine for the rest of the game.

It will be interesting to see what state that program is in when the Cougars roll in there next year. Personally, I hope they're good and BYU puts up a fight. With the rebuilding year next year for BYU if they can go into FSUs house and make a good showing of it I would be satisfied.

I was just talking about this with Surfah.

FSU owes EVERYTHING to Bobby Bowden. I feel they should have given him one last year. Everybody would know that it was indeed his last year. The fan support, the boosters, the players, and the brass that are calling the shots. I think they would be getting the type of interest and support for the program that Bowden brought to them in the first place. I understand the decision, I just don't agree with it.

That being said, one of the hardest things to do in the sports world is letting go of a legend (whether that is a coach or a player), making a clean brake, and moving forward without them. I guess they see letting him stay there in a limited role is showing him the respect that he deserves. I see it as throwing the ol' dog out in the rain.

Yup. As far as I am concerned FSU should be like Penn State and let him stay as long as he wants. Jimbo Fisher will be fired in 4 seasons or less.

Yep. Penn State did it right leaving things be through the tough years a few years back.

I think this is a mistake on FSU's part forcing him out. They owe their program to him.

Same with BYU and Lavell although he was probably more willing to hang things up that Bobby or Joe.

A year ago, didn't he say he wanted one more year? They granted it and he went 6-6. Also a year ago he was one game behind JoePa and wanted to go out on top. Now he's five games behind JoePa.

More than that, because I thought they wiped away a season or two because of the test score scandal or whatever that was. No?

That was my impression as well.

Isn't this how it was a few years ago with JoePa? He was definitely year to year and it seemed like he was begging to keep his job for just one more year over the course of a few years. Bobby Bowden was pulling away from him.

Bobby hasn't had a losing record in some time. In 2003 and 2004 Joe went 3-9 and 4-7 respectively.

I've heard stories about Bobby becoming more and more senile, not knowing when a game is over, who's winning and so forth. In JoePa's losing seasons he still had it all together though.

They are both nothing more than figureheads. Neither one does much coaching anymore. Remember Joepa coaching from the press box? He was all alone with no head set. He was just sitting there watching the game like he was a fan.

Bowden was an amazing coach who really built the program. They were nothing before him. They will stay in obscurity for quite some time is my guess. They should not have done Bobby this way, he deserved to coach as long as he wanted.
