A game like this has a lot of key issues that dictate the final outcome.
#1 reason we lost: we needed above average shooting from the 3 and didn't get it.
Secondary or more specific reasons:
--offensive execution in key possessions at end of game
--too tired at the end (is this a conditioning issue? Wake Forest played a tighter rotation AND they're the ones dealing with altitude but we seemed spent at the end and they did not)
--foul trouble and limited PT for Lee and also Miles
--inability to score in the post
--first half troubles keeping their guards out of the paint--excellent decision to switch to zone and excellent excecution of it. This bodes well for us in games we have trouble defending the pick and roll game or when quick guards are getting to key and killing us
But after all this (or in spite of all this 2 Ne 25:23) another key that directly changed the outcome was the fouling out of both big men at the 2:14 mark. Over the next minute we have three vital mistakes directly due to this.
Abouo subbed in at 2:14 and JT moved to the 5 in the zone.
1. At 1:33 85-85, they miss a 3 and the rebound comes down right in front of the rim where our big man should be. JT is out of position, they get rebound and put back. 87-85.
2. At 0:46, with the ball at the top of the key (10 ft behind it even), JT manning the 5 in the zone, moves from the key to hug a man in the deep corner?????????? Abouo's (you ball man) corner man sneaks under and catches a pass at the rim and draws the foul from Abouo. Abouo played huge that game and I share goat's man crush on him so I'll forgive him this one. JT created the problem.
3. Anderson comes in as Abouo fouls out, flubs the FT box out, and then can't hang on to the tipped rebound. Out of bounds, Wake's ball, game over.
I would really like to see how those last two minutes play out with Miles or McGregor in the game.
Great game, great atmosphere, another bummer loss. Five big games for Cougar fans the last month and a half in FB and BB and one win (USU BB). Sucks.
