  • Fumble that wasn't reviewed

I was curious for those that were watching on TV, why wasn't the fumble when Utah was driving reviewed? I heard someone at the game say something about the receiver's helmet coming off and the play was whistled dead. If that's true that just doesn't make sense to me. Did they explain things a little more on TV?

The rule is that if a player that has the ball loses h is helmet, the play is automatically blown dead. I think it makes a lot of sense, there would be a huge potential for injury if they allowed the play to continue.

Not sure why that doesn't make sense, but that is what happened. Key's helmet came off so they blew the play dead.

Seemed to be a lucky break for Utah. It was clearly a fumble.

This one was easy. When the ball carrier's helmet comes off the play is dead. The helmet was off before the hit on Key so the play was whistled dead. The fumble happened when Key got hit.

The rule states that the official can blow the play dead if the ball carrier's helmet comes off.

I'm curious to know if any BYU fans think the Unga fumble was reversed correctly. It sure didn't seem like there was irrefutable video evidence, but then again my opinion is based on the Mtn replays.

There certainly wasn't irrefutable evidence. IMO, it was a bad call. One of multiple poor calls (or no calls) that went against both teams.

It seems all of college football officiating has gone slightly away from the "irrefutable video evidence" concept and are doing their best to make the right call, regardless. It's the right way to go.

Ute fans trying to complain about the Unga fumble reversal are barking up the wrong tree. Any rational football fan could see that he was down well before the ball was ripped, a couple ute players obscuring the view of the mtn cameras doesn't change that.

So rugby players don't have helmets, that doesn't stop someone from tackling them.

They also are not being tackled by guys in full pads with helmets.

Did you see when Key got hit, in the face, by the BYU tackler's helmet? If a rugby player hits another player's head with his own head, he'd be in just as much pain as the other player.

In rugby, does the tackler have a helmet on? And can you see a difference between a runner being tackled by somebody with a helmet (football) and a guy being tackled by somebody without a helmet (rugby)? Can you not see the additional injury risk involved when a helmetless person is tackled by somebody who does have a helmet on?
