  • Older Ute Fans > Young Ute Fans

After interacting with the Ute fans on this board, I thought I had been convinced that Utes are decent people. Then, on the way into the game yesterday, I saw a group of about 15 frat boys picking on a small BYU fan. They were body checking him and calling him a douchebag.

Inside the game, we sat by quite a few Ute fans. Most were good-natured and cheered their team on. There was one dude harrassing the girl that watches the JJ portal. He was dancing in front of her in an obscene way, but no big deal. I could see myself being friends with almost all of the Ute fans older than 30 that I came in contact with.

The conclusion I've drawn is the good fans are the pre-Urban era fans. Urban has caused a lot long term harm to the U. He won a lot of games and did a lot of good for the short term, but his legacy is how he escalated the bitterness of the rivalry with his antics.

I am over 30. I'm glad we can still be friends.

That is cool that JohnnyLingo made it down to Provo for the game. I know he has to drive a long way.

FWIW I saw four Ute games pre-Urban and have missed one home game post-Urban (Wyoming 2007), and I get called a closet zoob far more often than I would ever be accused of mistreating BYU fans.

you're an anomaly anyways (meant as a compliment) and the accusations against you are evidence of the nastiness present in younger fans on both sides. I think that Urban was a bad thing for the rivalry. His "team down south" and the BYU stickers in the urinals were over the top.

I think the "team down south" was fun but the urinals were immature and stupid. I am more of the nature of the Ronnie Mac and Lavell rivalry. I think most of us are.

TDS is the standard I use to judge Ute fans. If they use it, then I immediately know what I'm dealing with. Similarly, Yootz and Ewets for BYU fans.

I agree about the Ronnie Mac/Lavell rivalry. Those were the golden years. Tough, intense games, no lasting bitterness when the outcome didn't go your way. I feel like Urban's "TDS" thing was over the top because he appropriated an element from another rivalry with a completely different context and grafted it into ours, where it had no place. It has a very negative feeling to it because it places BYU into a separate, inferior category that doesn't merit recognition or respect.

Its legacy still continues on today. I think Whittingham avoids saying the words BYU whenever he can. I can't think of many times that he has used it, he always says "they." I could be wrong on that, and I hope I am, but if not, it's a tacit validation of Urban's tactic and lack of respect.
