Academic All-Americans
"The first thing I learned upon becoming a head coach after fifteen years as an assistant was the enormous difference between making a suggestion and making a decision."
"They talk about the economy this year. Hey, my hairline is in recession, my waistline is in inflation. Altogether, I'm in a depression."
"I like to bike. I could beat Lance Armstrong, only because he couldn't pass me if he was behind me."

I know what you're saying here (and I see theOriginally posted by BlueHair View PostWhile Academic All-Americans are nice, I wish we had real All-Americans.

I could much sooner be a fan of Stanford or the service academies than Florida. At least the Big Ten went after a big-time addition in Nebraska; the Pac-10 wanted a game so badly, it added Utah

Not me, I could much sooner be a fan of the Sooners than an Ivy League program or a Service Academy. Too many white players makes for a boring brand of football, hardest part of being a Cougar fan.Originally posted by ERCougar View PostI know what you're saying here (and I see the

Florida has as many Academic All Americans as Stanford does. Florida's player is 1st team, Stanfords is second. Penn St. actually had 3 academic all americans. Texas has as many as BYU does, 2. You can put out top football teams with good students on them.Originally posted by ERCougar View PostI know what you're saying here (and I see the

I think we all do it, but we judge what we like and support based on our own set of principles. Nothing wrong with that. I think we should also remember there are great people out there that don't conform to all of our own basic principles.

That's good that Florida has a lot of Academic AA's. I was just throwing out an example of a great football program vs a great academic program. In case you're projecting your HC hatred (which I agree with) on this, this has nothing to do with HC and everything to do with football programs using college athletes and spitting them out. The fact that a program has a lost of AA's shows it has more than a cursory interest in preparing these kids for life.Originally posted by byu71 View PostFlorida has as many Academic All Americans as Stanford does. I couldn't care less if an athlete lives the HC.At least the Big Ten went after a big-time addition in Nebraska; the Pac-10 wanted a game so badly, it added Utah

What the heck does this have to do with having white football players?Originally posted by Ruby Soho View PostNot me, I could much sooner be a fan of the Sooners than an Ivy League program or a Service Academy. Cut Ruby Soho some slack. He's from Georgia, so he can't help himself; he was raised this way.Originally posted by ERCougar View PostWhat the heck does this have to do with having white football players?

Nope, not the hatred for the HC. I also wasn't knocking that you prefer to pull for a good academic institution over one that isn't.Originally posted by ERCougar View PostThat's good that Florida has a lot of Academic AA's. My point is more that there is room for all of us to pull for what we want to pull for. Personally I know Harvard, Stanford, Yale, etc. are great academic institutions. I also know they put out some of the greatest unethical SOB's in the business world that have ever walked the earth.
Not that this means anything, but by far the lousiest manager I have ever had was a Stanford MBA. The two best managers I have ever had were Weber St. and Idaho St. grads.
Stanford was founded by a "robber baron" if memory serves me correct.
I am not trying to accuse you of anything, but I think sometimes when we say we would rather support a high academic insitution or an instituion with high morals, we might find some who do that are stating that they are on a higher plane than those who seperate the football from the rest of the stuff that goes on at the school.
On the HC, I don't hate the HC. I dislike the opinion of people that think it is some kind of "higher" law. The "we have the HC", so we are a more moral institution than you mentality.Last edited by byu71; 11-25-2009, 08:17 AM.

It's not necessarily the institution I care about and really, I have no idea if Florida is a good academic institution. I'm only saying that I'm proud of Academic AA's--in general, they've achieved excellence both on and off the field and that speaks well for their future, I bet on average better than your typical athletic AA.Originally posted by byu71 View PostNope, not the hatred for the HC. Sure there are exceptions, but all else being equal, better college performance prepares a student better for life than poor college performance. At least the Big Ten went after a big-time addition in Nebraska; the Pac-10 wanted a game so badly, it added Utah
