  • 1993: The year the modern rivalry era began

Prior to this game the Cougars had dominated the Utes for nearly 20 years, with the Utes winning one game in the 70s (I think - 23-22 in 1978; I was there) and 80s (56-28). I watched the 1993 game in a sports bar in L.A. Thanks to Boylenover I found these clips from that game on the Ute board. That was the first of 3 in a row by the Utes over the Cougs, and the rivalry has been competitive ever since.

(To watch the clips click on this link, not the photo. Watching this again made me laugh out loud.)

    More about that game here.

LOL! Good stuff. 1984 was 1000 years ago but 1993 was just yesterday. Dumbest. Thread. Ever. You have what...a 20 game lead on the Cougars and yet you choose the year you actually started being competitive against Lavell to announce the "modern era" of the rivalry?

Man I tell you what, it did not suck that during my formative years the Ute game was a contest to see which quarter the 3rd string team might play in. 2 BCS games and the Ute fans still can't take that 1984 actually happened. I'm really not one to bring up something so long ago and so irrelevant but when I see threads like this that just beg for irrelevance I feel compelled.

You do make a good point. Let's go back to just one year ago:

Now that's what I'm talking about!!!! What else matters except the debacle that was 2008? I'm still trying to get the Crimson out of my mouth. Just think how Max feels?

Don't be silly. It is a perfect point in time to pick. Up until then, Utah had not been competitive with BYU, at all, for many years. That marks the year we began to compete again. What is so controversial about that? It wasn't much of a rivalry during the 80s, but it was during the 90s and 00s.

I don't think you will find many (any?) around here who deny the importance of BYU's NC. My only small jab on that has been that this was an event that happened in early childhood for most of the BYU fans on this board, ancients such as BYU71, JL, PAC and creek excepted, of course.

LA, I actually attended this game as a BYU fan, it was my last year there and I actually just pulled the ticket out and looked at it not that long ago. I may have to scan it in and make it my avatar. It was certainly memorable.

what? you switched sides? and in the year "we" began to be competitive?
that is not a good factoid. I thought you were a legit Utah fan.

Actually, that's a good way to get over a bad loss. Just convert to the other side and viola!, now it's a cherished memory!

Go to Utefans.net and it's currently a who's who of "Why I switched allegiances" and it always starts around 1988 or 1993. Curious. I think it's time to change the shocks on that bandwagon.

Utah Dan's was one the first posts I remember reading when I found the messageboard world. IIRC, it was his post about changing allegiances. I got a kick out of it but I recall thinking: "I can understand why somebody chooses to not be a BYU fan because the fanbase is full of dorks, but leaving BYU to be a Ute is the epitome of going into a relationship with both eyes wide shut!"

I love the out of state mormons who tire of the mormon culture only to matriculate to the University of Utah.

You are officially a BANDWAGON fan and have been exposed.

FWIW, I'm a Pitt Pirates fan since the day of my birth and will be until I die. Even after 17 losing seasons I haven't changed.

1993 must have been a tough year for UtahDan...he switches to the U and he also ditches the Chicago Bulls temporarily for the Houston Rockets. Fortunately, he never really threw away his Bulls jersey, so he was able to get right back into the swing of things a few seasons later.

With the exception of exUte and UtahDan, do we have any other people that "switched" allegiances?

For the all the flack SeattleUte gets, at least he is a Ute fan.
