  • Build a Better Mousetrap: the ultimate LDS football team

This is something Junkie has probably already done, but if you could put together a starting lineup (no 2-deep, just starters) of LDS kids, who would make the cut? Your LDS fantasy football team, if you will.

    Offense
    Defense
    Special teams

Bonus: Coaches? (you can pick anyone from any ranks: NFL, college, CFL, etc)

    The only two rules:

    1. They have to currently be in college. No plucking guys from the NFL or current HS players.
    2. They have to be LDS
    Fitter. Happier. More Productive.

This is interesting I have thought a lot about how good BYU would be if they landed every single top LDS recruit. This is just off the top of my head so if I am leaving someone out let me know. (starters listed first)

QB: Max Hall, Kevin Prince (UCLA)
RB: Harvey Unga, Matt Asiata (if healthy)
FB: Stanley Havili (USC), Manase Tonga
WR: Mckay Jacobsen (not many great LDS receivers)
    TE: Dennis Pitta, Andrew George
TE: Tony Moeaki (two tight end set on my team)
LT: Matt Reynolds, Stan Hasiak (UCLA)
RT:Zane Beadles (is he LDS?), Xavier Su'afilo (UCLA)
G: Mau Nomani (Oregon State currently on a mission)
    G: Terrence Brown
C: RJ WIlling, Hamani Stevens (currently on a mission, Oregon)

    DE: Jan Jorgensen
    DE: Will Tukuafu (oregon)
DT:Stephen Paea (Oregon State), Christian TUpou (USC), Latu Moal (OSU, Sioeli Nau (OSU), Matangi Tonga (MT. Sac JC),
DT:Hebron Fangupo (USC), Tonga Tea (Oklahoma State), David Tufuga (Texas A&M), Christian Cox (Utah), Sione Fua (Stanford)
    OLB: Jordan Pendelton
    OLB: Manti Te'o (Notre Dame)
    MLB: Uona Kaveinga (USC)
S: Bo Mcnally (Stanford), Suaesi Tuimaunei (Oregon State)
S: Andrew Rich (BYU), Scott Johnson (BYU)
    CB: Yikes!
    CB: Yikes!

    Coaching Staff:
    Athletic Director: Andy Reid
    Co-Head Coach/D-line coach: Bronco Mendenhall
    Co-Head Coach/LB coach: Kyle Whittingham
    Passing game coordinator: Norm Chow
Running game coordinator: Ken Niumatalolo (Navy)
QB coach: Darell Bevill (Minnesota Vikings)
    Recruiting Coordinator: Brandon Doman
    DB coach: Morgan Scalley
    Waterboy: Kalani Sitake.

Brandon Bair deserves to be on the DL somewhere. He plays inside and out, takes up blocks. He would be a great back up to Jan/Tuku.

Also no Co-HC on my team. Whitt is the HC. Norm's day has come and gone, give me Bevill as the OC.

And thus, BYU is where BYU is. Maybe Ruby Soho would care to opine again on why Brandon Bradley is an NFL prospect.

This would be a sweeeeet team. I would put your RB, FB and linebackers up against most other teams in the country.

Yeah the RBs are sick. Also the depth mainly at D-tackle is big time (all those polys) The other thing that would make me giddy is seeing Bo Mcnally and Andrew Rich playing safety together.

Is there any depth at LB? If this were a real team, you could try to shift some of the depth at DL over to LB.

Completely and utterly 100% disagree. Nowhere in the rules of BYU and the LDS church does it say everyone at BYU must be LDS.

Don't be naive. We all know what the attrition rate is at BYU for non-LDS DBs. There was a post on TBS that documented that only 10 out of the last 35 DB signees (regardless of ethnicity/religion) have managed to complete their eligibility without transferring or flunking out or being kicked out.

Sounds like BYU needs to do a better job of retaining them.

His personality is so magnetic he is unable to carry credit cards.
The police often question him, just because they find him interesting.
When he was captured by alien beings, they asked him to probe them.

Document the last 20 non-LDS BYU basketball players for me.

Obviously there are some misses. Every program has them. But the BB program wouldn't have done jack the last ten years without non-LDS.
