It would have to be Dalton. Nobody in the MWC is relevant compared to TCU.

This is an easy one. You have two juniors here and one senior. This is the Mountain West Conference. Therefore, the senior, no matter the ability, will win.

Come back when you've got a hard question to answer.

I agree it is Dalton right now. He has good enough stats and is leading the best offense in the MWC.

It is 1) Dalton, 2) Unga, and 3) Hall. Hall has better stats than Dalton, but they are not quite good enough to make up for the way that Dalton outplayed Hall in the BYU-TCU game.

You know I'm not the biggest fan of Hall's, but this really is unfair. Dalton was playing against BYU's piss-poor defense, while Hall faced one of the best defenses the MWC has ever seen.

I am just curious as to why you have Unga #2? Wide has been more impressive in conference games and has the numbers to prove it:

Wide: 106.3 yards per game, 5.8 yards per carry, 8 touchdowns
Unga: 100.2 yards per game, 5.2 yards per carry, 7 touchdowns

With that said, I think it goes to Dalton.

Because Wide did nothing against TCU and Unga had a great game against them. David Reed is more deserving of being in the discussion than Wide.

Unfair, schmunfair. Dalton deserves the award because he's winning. It's not his fault TCU's defense is superior to every other team in the conference.

Which brings us to the root of the problem: what are the qualifications for the award?

Best individual player? Best player on the best team? Some combination of the two?

My guess is that it's probably a combination of the two. Dalton is the leader of the best team. And while Hall has better passing stats, Dalton is a better runner, which makes him tougher to stop.

If TCU wasn't playing as good as they are this year, I could see Hall getting the award. But it generally goes to the leader of the best team.

Fair enough. By "leader" you mean guy with the best stats for his position? For example, if TCU had an awesome running back who was having a great statistical year, he might get the nod instead?

Not buying that argument. So, why not compare how Wide did against the Lobos vs. what Unga did against the Lobos? Wide has more touchdowns, more total rushing yards and a better average per carry (10% higher average which is even more impressive when you consider that teams have stocked up against the run knowing that Cain couldn't throw the ball while Unga had an effective passer in Hall). So because Unga had a better game against TCU in a big loss, you ignore Wide having a better overall season than Unga? On top of that, both teams have the same record. Strange argument.

With all that said, I think it goes to Dalton and that is probably the right decision.

Please take this to the Wide vs Unga thread. By the way, Harvey only played 1 half against New Mexico because he injured his ankle. Why not look at the total package as well, Harvey is averaing 96 yards per game, Wide 82. Why just conference games?

Pretty much so, yes. By leader, I mean the guy that is counted on to get things done. For TCU, it's Dalton. Sometimes, it can be a RB - like Marshall Faulk.

I like Wide as a RB. He is a very good back, but I would trade him for Unga without hesitation. I dislike Harvey Unga. I think he is an ass and I hope that he leaves BYU after this season, gets drafted, and never plays a down in the NFL. Despite this dislike, I can recognize he is absolutely the better player. He is a back that you can give the ball too 25-30 times per game.

Wide's performance in the TCU game is huge because it is the biggest game of the year for the Utes and he was a non-factor. Unga on the other hand did show up in the biggest game of the year. Unga wasn't the reason BYU lost that game, he is probably the only reason it wasn't a bigger blowout. Wide played a huge part in the Utes losing the game to TCU.

I'm actually surprised you aren't pushing Unga for OPOY over Dalton.
