  • 808s and Heartbreaks

Santa was nice enough to give me the new Kanye West CD in my stocking, and I've listened to it a bit at work/home the last few days, though not straight through. It is pretty cool. Different sounding than most hip-hop albums, but I'm digging it. I'm anxious to sit and listen to the whole thing straight through over the next break, but so far I'm a fan.

I have heard American Boy so many times this past month, it is starting to grow on me and I do not like that type of music. I think some of that has to do with will.i.am producing it.

This definitely isn't a genre I'm deeply-invested in, but I really like Kanye West. 808s and Heartbreak is an interesting move in a tangential direction for Kanye, and even though some of the tracks fall short, overall it's a really good album that shows his versatility as a musician. There's something ballsy about a rapper making an album with very little rap.

I have two young kids in my office and all they listen to is Kanye. I liked West's first album (I bought the CD which is rare for me) and also bought his sophomore album as well. However, I don't like the direction his music has taken. I hate that he now fancies himself a singer. The sound is too stylized and I am a big fan of electronica.

But despite his talent, and I admit he is talented, he's one of those rare entertainers whose personal views and ego won't allow me to like what he produces.

I haven't ventured into hip hop in a long time. I don't even like hip hop anymore and rarely follow it. Though I still check in with The Game, Jay-Z and T.I. Those are the only 3 guys currently producing tracks that I can listen to.

I just thought it was worth mentioning.

Why wouldn't I like him. He taught me how to Jane Fonda. You know what I mean.

Anyone catch Kanye's performance on SNL a few weeks back? The single worst performance I've ever seen on that show and that includes Ashley Simpson. Not even auto tune could save him.

I did. And you are correct...it was awful.

His stage setup was cool, though. Dug the video screen behind him.

SNL? People still watch that besides the reruns?

Saw the video clip on the internet and some blogger ripping him.

SNL is worth the watch for Andy Samberg alone. Mark Wahlberg talks to animals, c'mon. Unfortunately for Kanye people were watching.

West has encouraged us to expect such a superhuman level of perfection from him, it was inevitable he would one day not be able to meet it.

That day was last Saturday, when West performed on Saturday Night Live. Dude did not sound good. He was more American Idol blooper reel than Grammy-winning polished performer.

I love Kanye West. I have worn out all of his first three albums. This is an entertaining CD, but doesn't hold a candle to Late Registration. Late Registration can be listened to on repeat all day, it may be the perfect album.
