  • Lord of the Butt-Numbing Rings

I am visiting with family and several wanted to see the Lord of the Rings trilogy as they had somehow missed them before. SO, for the last several nights, we have been watching the extended versions of these movies. Aye Carumba. Peter Jackson should be glad for whoever made him shorten htese things for release. They are all butt numbingly long. Too long. Far, far too long. If you watch them, do not get the extended versions.

I must say, however, that I love the way they depict the effect of a cavalry charge on infantry in both the Battle of Helm's Deep (movie two) and the Battle of Minas Tirith (movie three). That was very well done.
    PLesa excuse the tpyos.

Couldn't agree more ... I have trouble with the length of the normal versions and I am a head over heals hopeless fan of the books. The extended versions are painful.

You could just watch Prince Caspian and see the same thing in only two hours.

Extended versions are usually a mistake. The Apocalypse Now extended version is a case in point. Horrible. But I thought Gladiator was an exception.

I LOVE these movies, and the extended versions. In fact, I spent the two previous New Years Eves before I got married watching all three movies (in that one day) with my dad. It was awesome.

Conversely, I sat in the basement and watched the extended versions this week as respite from everything else going on upstairs. The longer the movie, the better.

I was contemplating busting out the old VHS tapes of Jesus of Nazareth just to pass some time.

Gladiator has the potential to be better, but I thought the same thing about LOTR, to tell you the truth. Like Pelagius, I loved the books and I also very much enjoyed the movies as released. The extended versions added a lot of mournful and burdened glances from Frodo, whispering flashbacks between Arwen and Aragorn, and more exposition, especially about the Ents.

I think this may underscore that movies, while an art form, are at base an economic product and that the director's artistic vision is usually enhanced by the imposed realities of the marketplace.

I highly recommend the extended version of Lust Caution, which is a tremendous, underrated movie.

The title of this thread was unintentional, I know, but too bad there have been no comments made about creekster's choice of words.

Again, I am surrounded by amateurs.

                        I hope it was unintentional.
