  • Has Utah gotten over a hump?

One of the lines of demarcation between a successful season and a successful program in consistency and performance over down years. Utah has been trying to find that as a program. This year is a landmark for Utah. They had a great year last year and then lost a lot of talent. Despite this, they are competing for a conference crown again and could find themselves BCS eligible at the end of the year (they control their own destiny to some degree). That is an amazing change from the '05 season. I think it is safe to say at this point that Utah has become a program to be reckoned with. I believe they will finish the year ranked in the top 25. I think that by doing so, the Utes will have gone from media darling and flash in the pan to a powerful program that demands respect every year. What do you guys think?

I agree... in the BU years (Before Urban) I always thought of Utah like Shooter from Hoosiers. They would be doing great telling the boys not to get caught watching the paint dry then all of sudden they would show up drunk and need to be thrown out of the building.

Even post Urban it took a while for KW to get things on track. Urban's departure and previous recruiting by Urban and Ronnie Mac had left them in a hole at positions. Now, KW gets a great team in '08 and turns around in '09 to field another respectable team. His ability to get teams up for big games and prepare them to win was already established but, since UNLV '07, they have also learned how to be consistent.

I still think its we're a year or two out from making this kind of conclusion. The Utes are certainly on that path, though. I'd just like to see more than 2 consecutive years of operating at this level.

I agree with falafel. It's going to take more than just two consecutive years to get to that next level. The Utes, however, are headed in the right direction.

On the other hand, had they defeated Oregon, that may have been enough to push them up to that next level.

LOL. Utah has been consistently a winner for six years now. Its record in that span materially surpasses BYU's. It has been consistent and it has also risen to to new frontiers for a "mid-major." It has a breathtaking record against BCS teams, it has won multiple confernce championships in addition to the stuff that has made it famous.

One thing is certain: SU has been humping Utah for about 5 years straight. I don't see him getting over it anytime soon.

Why did you LOL at KD's post? He's the one on your side.

No. He considers the 05 season some kind of failure. I think if you take the long view Utah has been on course, Whit has taken them to new heights. Actually, 05 wound up a quite a good year; I would rather have Utah's 05 than BYU's 08 (sorry junkie, but this is a byu board and killer is evaluating us through blue goggles). In fact, I think you can only really judge a football program in 5-6 year time spans. This is why all the Ute fans who wanted to fire Whit in 05 and 06 were idiots.

You saying that you would take a 7-5 Utah team over a 10 win BYU team is all I need to know about your sports knowledge.

Perhaps SU is pointing out the difference in the way each of those teams finished the season.

In 2005 we beat BYU and a very good Georgia Tech team. BYU beat no good teams last year and lost both its last two games. BYU got slaughtered by the two good teams it played.

Another question is how long will the faithful BYU fans keep claiming the alleged BYU hump is hurting BYU football.

Ah, so this would explain why you're not sold yet on this year's Utah team. Thanks.

Also, SeattleUte referenced a "very good Georgia Tech" team.

Has Utah beaten a "very good" any team this season? Jury's still out, folks...at least SeattleUte implicitly acknowledges this in his post.
