  • Why are we here?

Many of you have asked for the inside story of how this new board got started, so I guess I will take a shot. Events of the last few months over on CG caused many of us to worry about the direction the board was taking. Things got especially crazy a week or so ago so I e-mailed Creekster and we started a discussion about what we should do (if anything). We talked about starting a new board and we both had serious concerns about the time commitment and the potential for hurt feelings. We wondered if it would be worth the hassle. But we both felt quite strongly about the many friendships we have made over the years and how much we valued being able to interact with a group of bright, fun, and interesting people. We were worried that the manner in which CG was being administered could potentially lead to the dissipation of that community. Whether or not those concerns were valid is a legitimate topic for debate. All I can say is that it seemed real to us. Furthermore, it disturbed us that we would even need to have that debate. The fact that the community could potentially be at the mercy of one individual didn’t seem right. Frankly, we had grown a bit tired of the drama.

Both of us felt that a new message board should have a de-centralized method of administration. Hence the formation of an executive committee of long-term and even-tempered posters to provide guidance and oversight. We put together a list of names and started making contact. The response was enthusiastic. We found that we were not alone in our concerns. Things moved rapidly from there and here we are.

I think I can also speak for Creekster when I say that we don’t want this to be thought of as “Lebowski’s and Creekster’s Board”. Frankly, I don’t think the Dude and the Ape Man are sufficiently interesting to pull that off. But I sincerely believe that our entire cast of characters is interesting and very capable of thriving. This board belongs to the community as a whole. Think of us as the facilitators. Or the janitors behind the scenes sweeping the floor and making a smartass comment from time to time.

Finally, I would like to publicly express my thanks to Mike. This is an awkward transition but I do appreciate what he accomplished with CG and I have enjoyed our association over the years. It is my sincere hope that he will someday feel comfortable joining us over here.

Jeff and Creekster, I have great respect for the two of you, but I find that explanation extremely lacking. I've still yet to hear anything about this affair other than "we had fears that possibly there was a potential for something to happen that could lead to the first steps of a trend that could finalize in the deterioration of a great message board so we went ahead and killed it ourselves".

I don't expect you to understand. Many of the discussions in question were not in public.

What did you find valuable in CG? The domain name or the group of posters who spent time there? If the vast majority of that group picks up and moves to a different URL, with arguably a more equitable governing structure, what exactly has been killed?

        Santos,

Mike says he has some big ideas for CG 2.0, and those ideas are not compatible with a genuinely democratic environment. Once Mike rolls out the new project, if it is fun and worthwhile, he will enjoy the support of everyone here.

So why not take Mike at his word? There two projects taking place; one is Mike's creative vision quest, and the other is a simple, democratic, community BB.

I see no reason why they can't both be a great success.

I haven't followed the CG drama at all so maybe I'm way off base here, but has anyone considered that Mike just wants out? He took a month off, realized that he has a wife, a job, and a life, and that CG was taking too much of this away? So he comes back with this goofy Godfather schtick and drives everyone off.

Keep in mind that Waters isn't in a profession where he can bill clients for CG time (no offense, but I now have a short list of LDS attorneys whom I would NOT retain...). I've taken a week off from the boards before and I'm amazed at how much more productive I am. I never spent near the amount of time that I'm sure Waters puts in and taking a break is in some ways really nice. I can't imagine what a month off would be like. Unfortunately, I'm just too addicted to try it out.

Maybe CG 2.0 is just no CG at all.
At least the Big Ten went after a big-time addition in Nebraska; the Pac-10 wanted a game so badly, it added Utah

That's what I thought, too. I thought he was setting it all up from the time he walked out. But when I talked to him about it, he seemed really confused at the suggestion. So either he wasn't trying to set all this in motion, or he was doing it subconsciously.

And it was actually the opposite of what you suggest: the month he took off only reaffirmed his devotion to CG. He just has an odd way of showing it.

This is hilarious. I actually regularly get 20-30% concessions on my Utah legal bills arguing that I'm not paying for my lawyer to troll whatever message board that's affiliated with his undergraduate institution.
