  • Couple questions for ute fans...

After watching the Dolphins several times this season and the utes the last couple games, I wondered who the better prospect was between Robert Johnson and Sean Smith.

Whenever I watch Smith, I'm in awe at how good he already is, less than halfway through the regular season. That said, I'm not so sure, if given a similar opportunity, Johnson couldn't have a similar or even more impact at safety than Smith has at CB.

So the question(s)...yeah, yeah, I know they play different positions...

Which was a better DB while at the U?

Which player has better pro potential?

Either way, I hope you effin ute fans appreciate getting studs like those two guys in your defensive backfield.

P.S. I guess I'd be interested in hearing the opinions of BYU fans too.

As far as best career at Utah,I would think that you would have to go with Johnson because of his consistent play over the last 3 years. Smith was good not great his sophmore year. If Smith had come back, he could have separated himself from johnson, but he obviously made the right choice.

As far as pro potential, I would lean towards Smith. He is a physical freak at corner and is still learning. Johnson is a good coverage safety, but I wonder about his ability to fill against the run in the pros(his game against AFA changed my view on this some). If he has a good game against BYU, specifically filling the lane and taking on Unga, he will go along ways toward addressing what I see has his only weakness.
"The first thing I learned upon becoming a head coach after fifteen years as an assistant was the enormous difference between making a suggestion and making a decision."

"They talk about the economy this year. Hey, my hairline is in recession, my waistline is in inflation. Altogether, I'm in a depression."

Like you, for the longest time I thought he might be weak against the run, but after watching that AFA game, I'm not sure he isn't one of the better tackling safeties I've seen this year in college football. It will be interesting to see how he closes out the year, but as of now, he looks like a late first round pick to me.

He is a good tackler, I guess his size seems to be a concern when you envision him hitting a big back like Unga or Adrian Peterson.

I specifically thought of that play when I listed AP as a guy you would worry about hitting

I'm not sure which one of the two is better. As you pointed out, they play different positions, so it's really tough to say which is a better college player.

I just know that it's a nice problem to have.

As for better college DB, can I say Eric Weddle?

I'm not sure who I would say is better. Smith was a lock-down corner. Probably the hardest position to fill on the field. He is still a work in progress at the NFL level, but, if he has the work ethic, he could be that kind of guy in the NFL too.

RoJo has been an amazing ball hawk, but he isn't a real big hitter. Probably because he needs to put on about 10 pounds. He did a great job at tackling in the AFA game, so the potential is there. Right now, he reminds me of Antoine Sanders and Arnold Parker in that they both had incredible athletecism, but it takes more than that.

So I would have to say that in the long run, Smith could probably have the longer career in the NFL. A lock-down corner in the NFL is hard to come by and can play a very long time.

It ended up working out okay for AD. I hope it works out for Sam. He seems like a good kid.
We're all confused. But you'd think out of everyone, Babs would know what she's talking about.

Those 2 made an incredible combination. Both of them were incredibly gifted athletically. Had they kept AP at safety, I think he would have had a longer career in the NFL. Antoine on the other hand had all the tools but got some bad advice from someone and that killed his chances in the NFL.

As a Dolphins fan and having watched every game this year multiple times, Sean Smith seems to be regressing a bit. He started out great but he is making the same rookie mistakes in week 6 that he made in week 1. He needs to progress a bit more but he does have loads of potential.

I would hazard to guess that as more of his habits get on film, teams are finding ways to exploit them.

Guys, Adrian Peterson's nickname is All Day. Therefore, he is AD.

As for the discussion at hand, I would say RoJo had the better career as a Ute (3 pretty strong years vs. 1 strong year), but I doubt he'd get drafted higher than Smith in April.
