Maybe other schools have something similiar, but BYU indeed has two constituencies. The religion/football crowd and the football crowd.
Bronco made it well known from the beginning the crowd he chooses to cater to is the religion/football crowd.
I submit the following: Has told CC gatherings and donor gathering on numerous occasions that "some" may not like the emphasis not being on football, but basically they could like it or lump it.
Recruits will recruit BYU. The football program will not stand by, but will actively encourage missions. Football is priortiy 5. The honor code is a plus. Firesides are most important function during the week. He gets called on it, but is unapologetic.
I am not saying he shouldn't be this way. If that is what he believes, fine. As long as he wins at a high level, the football crowd couldn't care less or at least very little about the religion aspect. However, that part of the crowd, gets tired of the platitudes when the team does not perform at a high level and much to the chagrin of the religion/football crowd, the group of fans represents a large number of the fan base.
So what do you do. Well, the religion/football fans are already making their strong feelings known. Football crowd, we don't need you. Don't let the door hit you in the butt on the way out. Yet, these very same folks, the I would rather lose with integrity crowd, will desert the program faster than any other segment.
You think I am wrong. If the last 2 years are repeated for the next 3, how big do you think fireside attendance will be. My guess is it will shrink, big time.
