  • Jeremy Kerley

I think a big key in this game will be keeping Jeremy Kerley in check. Last year he made the Cougs look foolish all on his own. This will be the toughest test BYU faces this year to see if they have improved defending against the wildcat. I also think they have to kick away from Kerley. Kickoffs need to go to the opposite side of the field and I wouldn't mind if punts go out of bounds or are short in order to keep Kerley from returning the ball.

I think one of the reasons he made BYU look so bad was that they hadn't shown him/that formation before. What they did with last year was I believe the first time they did it. I may be wrong. I think they will definitely prepare for him this year. At least I hope they do.

BYU struggled with the wildcat against several teams, not just TCU. Based on how BYU has dealt with the wildcat this year, I think we're in a better position to handle Kerley than we were last year.

I agree, I think our defense is much improved over last year against the wildcat. Kerley maybe the fastest player we see all season. I'm excited to see the defense rise to the test. I will say that punt return against CSU last week, may have been more about piss poor tackling than the return itself.

Other than Utah and TCU, who else ran it last year? I honestly don't remember.

didn't BYu run it a few times? specifically against Utah at RES?

Yes they did. They also got a little creative out of it if I remember correctly. I think Max did the step away thing and yell at the receiver once.

Of all the bad things Max did in that game, this had to be the worst. Acting skills on a par with Dwayne Johnson. His feigned confusion, shoulder shrug, motion to the sideline, and stumble out of the way brought back warm memories of 10th grade drama class.

Seriously, Bob Anae ain't clever. You are on the 1 yard line. Just freaking hand the ball to Unga and score the points. It's not like you are going to be stopped. Spare us the quad salchow Uta Hagen bit next time you are in town, please.

Other than that, I really appreciated Max's effort.

I know CSU ran it and I believe UNLV too. Utah State may have run it some too, but I may not be right. I might just be thinking of Burrell.

Yes. You witnessed it from the seat you were in at that game. Hall walked over as if he was telling the receiver an audible and the ball was snapped to Unga who walked in to the endzone. I believe that was the last time BYU scored.

From when I played football, the direct snap to a RB (now called the wildcat) normally was simply a direct snap, dive play. Has it changed that much or does the RB still run off guard/tackle the majority of the time?

It is different. It is still a direct snap, but there is an option read where either a WR/RB coming in motion can take the ball in a hand off, or the direct snap player can dive, run off tackle or in some cases throw. The big thing is the seams that it can create in a defense with the different options. If the linebackers cheat and follow the motion player, they leave the middle exposed. If they don't follow the motion, they give a player who is running full steam a chance to get to the corner.

It is similar in that you are getting the ball in your primary playmakers hand quicker and without a QB, but the thinking is less of power man on man football and more making the defense make a mistake.

I don't remember CSU or UNLV running it. I remember them torching BYU through the air but I don't remember them running the wildcat.

Also, it usually involves an unbalanced line (i.e., with two guards on the same side of the ball). Not always, but the Miami/Arkansas version usually does.

well they better because those plays last year were the worst defended Wild HornyToad/Hog/Cat that I saw. Kerley ran for 15 yards before anyone even appeared in the picture.

His entrance into the game started my worst cussing fit that I had all of last year.
