  • Mormon Books for Mormon MIL

I'm back in St. George, spending the x-mas break with the in-laws. FIL is not a member, so his present was easy, a bottle of Johny Walker. MIL is the queen of Mormon Kitsch. She buys all of the LDS popular books (I'm not sure she reads them) and her house is full of crazy Mormon kitsch. When I asked her what we could get here she suggested we just go to Deseret Books and pick her up a little knickknack to throw on the heap.

Deseret Book?? I had hoped to never walk into that store again, but life's mysterious twisting path has brought me to it.

HELP!! Is there a recent book title or photo book of temples or something that no decent Mormon matriarch could do without? Deseret Book... I'm scared.

I know you went to Yale, so I don't want to insult your intelligence, but it seems like your gift giving paradigm is overly simplistic:

    Non members get alcohol.

    Members get LDS-related gift.

Would your MIL enjoy something else.....oh, I don't know....a sweater, a new sauce pan, some gift certificates to the movies, a framed pic of her grandchild, a new DVD, etc?

Or you can go to Deseret Book and buy her an LDS-related present, which is also a great option.

This reminds me....I need to buy drugs, pornography, and pro-gay related material for my non-member family before Christmas eve. My LDS in-laws are getting temple clothes, Michael McLean CDs, and CTR rings. Should be a fun holiday.

The FIL enjoys good whiskey. Good booze is always a good gift for people who like it.

As for the MIL, we told her that we were struggling to figure out what to get her, and she suggested Deseret Book. She doesn't 'need' anything.

Any suggestions for books or Mormoney things?

I am here for you Robin.

First of all, forget Deseret Book. You need to make a statement here and show that you are a world-class son-in-law. May I suggest you take some of that day-trading wealth you have been building up and buy your MIL a personalized portrait with the Son of Man Himself?

I can't think of a better, more thoughtful gift.

I am especially fond of footprints-in-the-sand Jesus:

(Uhh..... How much does your MIL weigh? You think Jesus could pull it off?)

You can thank me later, bro.

Jeff, I think your suggestions have helped me figure out the perfect gift.

She is taking an art class so that she can learn how to draw/paint images of Jesus (no kidding!). I volunteered to pose as Jesus (I've got longish hair and passable scruff), but she says her artistic talent is quite up to the challenge of depicting Christ... no widow's mite here.

So I will get her some art supplies!

Per the Church Handbook of Instructions, I am not sure you should be portraying the Savior.

                    Robin,

if you want to get her a LDS book that actually reflects good scholarship, I recommend the following:

Jesus Christ and the World of the New Testament: An LDS Perspective

                    by Richard Neitzel Holzapfel and
                    Thomas A. Wayment and
                    Eric D. Huntsman and

                    http://deseretbook.com/store/product/4931232

Church Handbook of Instructions? That is probably the only LDS book I haven't seen on one of their vanity bookshelves. Do they sell it at Deseret Book?

Thanks! I picked up a pack of prismacolor pencils, so x-mas is taken care of, but she has a birthday creeping up just around the corner, so I will pick up one of these titles for that.

Another Deseret published title with good scholarship is the Spencer W. Kimball biography:
