  • Go Utes...

I am now a Utah fan. I'm not happy about it, and this will only last for a week and a half, but i desperately need Utah to win. I don't care if it's a tacit admission that we're a small-time football conference. We ARE a small-time football conference. Whose flagship member just lost to the 4th (or 5th or 6th, I forget...) best (or worst...again, I forget) team in the PAC 10--on a down year. Yeah, I take joy in the fact that CSU just dominated the WAC in the Delaware (or some other insignificant state, I forget...) Bowl, and I sure hope TCU can again dominate the WAC in the Dandelion Bowl. Yes, I'm claiming moral victories over WAC teams. WAC teams. Such is the level I've reached.

All of this makes the prospect of cheering for Utah a little easier to swallow. Maybe I'll get used to the dirty feeling inside.
At least the Big Ten went after a big-time addition in Nebraska; the Pac-10 wanted a game so badly, it added Utah

Is BYU the sole flagship member of the MWC?

It would seem to me that BYU is one of three, with Utah and TCU.

It would seem to me that since you didn't attend a MWC University that you don't know anything about anything.

On the contrary. Because I went to Marist, I know sucktitude. And the MWC isn't complete sucktitude.

So stick that in your Flyer's pipe and smoke it.

I would say that in terms of national perception, BYU was once the lone flag bearer, but that day has passed. In fact, if Utah pulls off the upset, BYU may relinquish the flag altogether. I'm not sure TCU has enough national recognition to qualify, but then I don't know what the requirements for bearing are.

Nah, BYU still is the flagship school. They don't necessarily deserve it, but half of the country thinks Utah's just another name for BYU. Among those who follow college FB closely, they'll probably consider Utah to be the MWC shiz, but among the average casual sports fan, MWC football = WAC football = Steve Young/Ty Detmer/Jim McMahon/BYU.

Sorry that we suck so bad.

That's a great point - a significantly large portion of the country has no idea that Utah and BYU are two separate schools. It's all Mormon as far as they're concerned.

I'm probably overstating a little. I just remember my residency director was a fairly big college football fan, big ND fan, and we'd talk football quite a bit. This was 2003-04, when BYU sucked and you made your Fiesta Bowl run, and I was shocked at his level of ignorance regarding the MWC. He knew I was a big BYU fan and knew the average bit of BYU history, but it was like he considered Utah to be a sort of BYU satellite school. It was weird, but fairly typical of the average Big 10 country football fan.

                        No, not really.

When I was in school, only the members of the LDS Church back in New York knew they're two different schools.
