We lost too many on defense to not struggle. We also had a loss of depth at running back that cost us. Hopefully Tonga will qualify next year.
Next year was always supposed to be the year this thing comes together. In order for that to work we need a few things to happen:
Max needs to improve. While he did well early eventually teams figured out his tells. He needs to work on arm strength and not staring down his receivers. I also think his pocket presence needs some work as he doesn't seem to know when to tuck the ball and take off.
Tonga needs to requalify and Unga needs to remain eligible. (I've heard Unga isn't the best academically.) It would be nice if JJ can step it up a bit.
Jacobsen needs to be ready to play. This is especially true if Collie decides to go pro. (I'm pretty sure he will go pro.) Chambers and Ashworth need to step up a tad as well.
Our D was inexperienced this year. Hopefully the experience will pay off. We need to improve the defensive backfield so our front seven can do more than play assignment football. If the D backfield can get stronger then we can run more stunts and blitzes to confuse the opposition.
Fowler will be gone. My biggest gripe this year has been the coaches approach to the safety position. I don't care if Pendleton is a wuss or Teo struggles with the scheme. If you're going to suck at a position you might as well suck with your young guys gaining valuable experience. You never know when a lightbulb might click for one of them and they turn the corner.
