Well, because he thought it was good sport. Because some men aren't looking for anything logical, like money. They can't be bought, bullied, reasoned, or negotiated with. Some men just want to watch the world burn.
That is unfortunate that this hire seems like such a disaster, because it was nice to know that, generally speaking, New Mexico was a well-coached team that would come ready to play. With New Mexico, there was generally at least hope that they could knock off a quality BCS team. I fear that they will now become like SDSU, and that is the last thing the conference needs.
Gosh, the football offices in Albuquerque must be a fun place to go to every day.

Suspended for 8 working days. What a joke. He will miss the UNLV game on the 24th.
This was UNMs chance to cut ties and with cause to do so and for some reason they gave him a slap on the wrist.
Not getting to shake hands with Sanford after a game is a bit of a reward if you ask me.

I don't remember where I read it (maybe Dr. Saturday), but someone posited the scenario that New Mexico defeats the Rebels without Locksley.
It would make his firing in December a lot less difficult, although if they're not firing him now, they'll probably give him another year or two.

Looks like he got suspended.. Will be interesting to see what happens if the team plays well without him and how the Admin attributes the motivation. Ether for their coach (Rallying behind him or because he is gone)..
I watched most of Long's press conference when he left UNM and got the impression that he was "voluntarily" stepping down with some pressure from the higher ups, even though he didn't indicate as such at the time.
I haven't followed the case since then, but can someone verify that Long wasn't exactly leaving of his own free will and choice? If so, that has to be one of the most boneheaded moves ever. You have a program that has been miserable for its entire existence except for the time when Long was there, and somehow he's not good enough for the program?
The coach he punched resigned. Look for a major lawsuit coming soon to a courtroom near you! Getting punched while on the job, and then not having the offender get fired is certainly a "hostile work environment" - UNM will settle with him for mid-6 figures plus.
Why do that for this horrible coach - who happens to be an ass as well. He must have MAJOR dirt on somebody...
It is even more ridiculous after reading this outside the lines piece. In fact, there were testimonies of assistant coaches to the HR department that Locksley did choke and punch Gerald, not "Push and shove".
New Mexico is dumb. What a dumb university. Their program sucks. They made a huge mistake in this hiring. And as CJ said, here is the perfect out. They can blame the season, the current state of the program, and even their poor hiring decision on this incident and be rid of him, but don't.

UNM is in a lose-lose situation. If Locksley doesn't get fired, UNM looks like a spineless coward that protects someone who creates a hostile work environment. If Locksley gets fired, accusations of racism will be pouring in from all sides.
