  • Many rambling football thoughts....

1.) Utah made a statement on saturday, IMO. The Utes went into the 4th best, arguably, program's house in the conference in a year the Utes are arguably rebuilding and spotted the Rams a 14 point lead with 20 minutes to go. Utes put on the jets and pull out a good win. The point of this is it is going to be a rare event when any of the top 3 teams are beaten by anyone other than the the other two clubs in the top 3. If CSU can't beat the Utes in Fort Collins in a rebuilding year with half of the Utes injured, I doubt they will ever be able to do it. I like Fairchild and I think he was a good hire for CSU, but this MWC has 3 very good programs with young and energetic coaching staffs that I just don't think the Rams can catch.

2.) I really like BYU's receiving corps. I thought UNLV sucked ass pretty bad, but I think a big part of that was BYU's offense is starting to click. There is no question it is easier to click when playing the Rebels and the upcoming tilt against Cal State San Diego, but I think Tonga is getting back in shape and Harvey is nearing 100%. The receiving corps is the best, collectively, I have ever seen at BYU. Big, strong with great hands and they run good patterns. They catch the ball in traffic and run hard. Not a great deal of shake and bake, but they deliver a blow for receivers. Oneil Chambers is becoming my favorite BYU player on offense. When he doesn't fumble, he makes my nipples hard. I think BYU can put up 24-28 points on TCU.

3.) Scott Johnson does make a difference for BYU's defense.

4.) I think the standings in the MWC could be 3 blocks of ties. BYU, TCU and Utah going 7-1. WYO, CSU and AFA each going 4-4. SDSU, UNM and UNLV all going 1-7. The gap between tier 1 and tier 2 is significantly larger than the gap between tier 2 and tier 3. To be honest I think the winner of the BYU-TCU game will go undefeated but I still think the tier disparity is correct.

5.) I watched Army in High Def and then would jump back to the WYO game and PAC nailed it like Ron Jeremy with Marylin Chambers....the mtn. looks like the camera lens has a layer off vaseline, or perhaps KY Jelly, over it. Saying that ARMY is America's Team! 3 victories by the 11th of October and still with Temple and one FCS team to go on the schedule.....ON BRAVE OL ARMY TEAM, ON TO THE FRAY-AY-AY-AY! FIGHT ON TO VICTORY, FOR THAT'S THE FEARLESS ARMY WAY!

6.) I am an official Husky fan in the Pac-10. I really like Sark. I was raised in a Ventura County town of which DDD is extremely jealous. I hated SC so I rooted for UCLA. I don't like Neuheisal and I can't stand how good SC is. The only former Simi Valley High grad who made the NFL played at Washington in the mid-late 70's. Napolean Kaufman kicked my ass in the 100 mtr dash a few times as well. But I really loved Sark at BYU. His taunting of KSU after KO's winning TD catch is one of my favorite BYU football moments. Over this year I find myself emotionally attached to the Huskies cuz of Sark. I am old school and UDub still has a track around its football field. Much like Alex P. Keaton who stood with women at a "take back the night march" cuz he wanted to get into Courtney Cox's nickers, I stand with SeattleUte for similar reasons!

I am ready to make my TCU prediction and after your ramblings, this is as good a place to attach it as any.

Barring any injuries, I think BYU beats TCU by 10 or more. I agree with you, the offense is rounding into shape. Home field advantage. Neutral field, I would still pick BYU, but not by as much.

Addressing your other points. Utah will be good year in and year out, IMHO. That's because they have an excellent coach and he can focus on coaching. Same with TCU. BYU will be good year in and year out because of who they can recruit and coaching. I suspect BYU is succeptable to some bigger drop offs though because of the inconsistency the revolving door with players can create. Looks like Bronco is addressing that though.

I really don't see another MWC team but the big 3 winning a conference championship in the forseeable future. Maybe Wyoming.

The ending to that Husky game was insane.

That should be a fun game in LES next year.

He kicked everybody's ass in the 100 meter dash. To this day, outside of Deon Sanders, I'm not sure I've seen a faster guy in college football than Kaufman.

I'll be interested to see what happens with Patterson after this year. Clemson and Auburn flirted with him last year, and there will be enough jobs that come open that he'll get a look. I've told my buddy at UVA that they should've offered him the job right there on the field after the game. If Patterson goes, it'll be interesting to see if TCU can maintain its solid record and reputation.

I agree with this. I think Whittingham and Bronco are pretty solid in staying at their respective schools. Patterson if he receives the right off could be gone. It would take a lot of money and a good school, but I don't think Patterson's ties are the same as Whittingham and Bronco. Patterson made this TCU team what they are. I think there is a substantial drop off if he leaves.

Bear in mind that Willingham retired in place for one maybe two years. The guy was depressed or something. I heard the team wasn't even ever going full speed in practice last year, even pre-season. Washington was down there with Big Sky teams recruiting last year and Willingham hadn't done much for a couple of years. Also, the espirit de corps was at Death Valley level. By all rights Sark shouldn't have them competing for the Rose Bowl for five years. He's already got them in every game against top competition.

Thank you again LaVelle Edwards and BYU for another of your sons!

Sark is building this team the right way too. You always knew that at some point when Neuheisel had the Huskies on top some sort of drama would bring them back down. Sark is a good quality guy and is one of best recruiters and motivators in college football. I think he brings this team back to contention quickly and they stay there for a long time. It doesn't hurt to have a top 5 quarterback too.

Utah has always had TCU's number, even when the Horns were ranked. The only exception was 2005 when Utah's worst team in the past 7 years went to Fort Worth and lost in OT on an illegal pick.

The games are always low scoring and close, but in the end TCU's great defenses break down.

He was seriously fast. He would beat me by a good 7 mtrs and he was just accelerating away from me the entire race. The dude couldn't have been any taller than 5'6". You might remember Steve Broussard. Another squatty fast kid in the same build as Napoleon. He played at Manual Arts High in the mid 80's and then at Washington State the year Wazzu beat Ty and the Cougars. I like those type of players. I think Kaufman was the strongest football player I have ever seen play, pound for pound.
