  • Proposed Las Vegas Development and what it means for our conference

If it goes through that is.

    This proposal by Dreamscape
could provide some major benefits to the conference.

    1. Las Vegas Maaco Bowl would be in a state of the art stadium which is very close to the strip. After I got back from the Sugar Bowl last year I was thinking about the experience and realized the coolest thing about the event. Everybody walks from Bourbon street down to the game. Both going and coming out were really cool as throngs of people (70k+) filled the streets and marched to and fro. Its the chief reason why the sugar bowl is the best bowl game around (DDD dont start with the rose bowl. Its a freaking mess getting in and getting out and there is nothing around it.) The location they want to put this is 2-3 miles from the strip. The monorail would play a major part in getting people there.

    2. The new stadium would also have a 25k seat basketball arena that would become the site for the conference tournament. The T&M would remain for UNLV home games but the new arena would definitely be use for the tournament.

    3. Teams in our conference could schedule games with big programs like sooners and byu did for texas stadium. In fact a very cool thing would be to have opening weekend have two large games for byu and Utah at the vegas site versus some large name teams that want to throw a bone to their fans. Sure Florida or Alabama won't come to Salt Lake but if the game was in Vegas they are more enticed.

    4. In 2013 when Utah and Colorado go to the Pac-12 it will be a great place to have the conference championship game. After that happens and the MWC adds boise st., utah st, Fresno and Nevada they can have their conference championship game there too.

Where exactly do they propose building this? I can't find it on the website.
Ain't it like most people, I'm no different. We love to talk on things we don't know about.

First off, I agree that Utah is the most attractive non-BCS team for the Pac 10 to add. But Colorado and its sizeable sports budget deficit aren't leaving for the Pac-10 any time soon. More expensive travel and a crappier TV contract aren't very enticing.

But I agree that Vegas could be a major bowl venue if it just built a decent stadium. The weather isn't horrible during the bowl season, there's a ton of hotels, and its an appealing bowl destination due to the nightlife. People want to be able to fit a mini-vacation in with the bowl travel and Vegas offers that. Vegas would also be a potential Super Bowl site if Goodell could get past the gambling issue (I don't know why this would be a big deal).
Part of it is based on academic grounds. Among major conferences, the Pac-10 is the best academically, largely because of Stanford, Cal and UCLA. “Colorado is on a par with Oregon,” he said. “Utah isn’t even in the picture.”

I never said Utah is going to lose 5 games.

                i like this idea.

it always shocks me that unlv and sdsu are unable to field decent football teams, but after decades of losing, it's gotta be very hard to build a program up.

That's funny. My map says 2.3 miles.

I would really like the idea if the effing bowl game was played AFTER Christmas. Even better if it is after New Years.

I can't believe you actually went to the effort of alternating colors within a word...
At least the Big Ten went after a big-time addition in Nebraska; the Pac-10 wanted a game so badly, it added Utah
