  • Stafon Johnson out for the year?

DDD, Sipi anything? Rumor is that he hurt himself this morning lifting weights.

I never like to hear about guys getting hurt. When it leaves a program like USC with only 3 All-American caliber RBs it is even worse.

Allegedly he dropped some weights on his neck.

Yikes, that is scary. Having watched a couple of those failed bench press videos pelagius posted in The Gym I hope this is not so serious as to go beyond football injury.

Locke was just talking about how he was rushed to the hospital because of what Junkie said. All they said was he had to be rushed to the hospital.

Johnson was bench pressing when the bar slipped from his hand and fell on his throat, according to a release from the school.

"It hit him with a lot of force, and it hurt him," coach Pete Carroll said after the Trojans' brief practice Monday night. "No broken bones as far as I understand, but he's got some damage in there somewhere, and they're working it out, trying to figure out what it is. ... It is serious. He did get hurt, so we don't know exactly what it is, and they're not going to know until they go through the surgery."

I wonder if he was using that stupid grip with your thumb off the bar. My high school PE teacher always advocated this grip, but it always felt to me like the bar was going to roll out of my hands.

Many people use that grip. It puts the bar lower on your palm so that the weight is aligned with your forearms as you press. With a traditional grip you can strain your wrists when going heavy.

It crushed his Neck/vocal cords completely and he had to have an 7 hour surgery to try and repair them. He is in critical condition out of surgery. he is breathing out of a trach at this time..

I pray he makes it out OK and is able to heal quickly. This is the man who scored the winning touchdown against Ohio State..

                    Good luck to him..

Strained wrist or broken neck? Easy choice for me.

That's awful. Hopefully he'll recover quickly and fully.

I've never used the "open thumb" grip for the precise reason that I didn't want the bar to do exactly what happened to Johnson.

I also think that guys do too much weight. This may not have been the case here. I noticed one summer at a Gold's Gym in California that the men wouldn't do as much weight but appeared to be more experienced lifters than what I saw in Provo. They would also do more reps. I went back to Provo and I would see guys with really average builds doing waaaay too much weight and way tooo few reps.

I haven't done a traditional bench press in years. First, if the angle between your upper and lower arms are going much narrower than 90 degrees, then you're causing damage to your upper back and shoulders. My father has had shoulder surgery on both of his shoulders and his physical therapist told him he's horrified whenever he goes to the gym and sees what guys are unintentionally doing to their shoulders. I still do declines and inclines with dumbbells and I'll do things with a flat bench that doesn't include the traditional bench press motion and in my experience this all works far better than the bench press. But the biggest key is lowering the weight, doing a lot more reps and using the correct motion.
Part of it is based on academic grounds. Among major conferences, the Pac-10 is the best academically, largely because of Stanford, Cal and UCLA. “Colorado is on a par with Oregon,” he said. “Utah isn’t even in the picture.”

I heard them talking about this a bit on the radio. They said had he not had such a strong and muscular neck, he wouldn't have survived.

Looks like he has woken up and is communicating by writing. He had no idea where he was or what had happened..

Glad to hear he will be recovering.. This is good news..
