We don't have to chalk it up to naivete (although at times it may be this) or dishonesty; I think this has implications for making church more rewarding in the sense of worship as a collective experience rather than an individual experience.
Very good points indeed. Frankly, this is something that instructors should embrace as well. Understanding this view can definitely help foster more poignant discussions in Sunday school. This would help those who may not be comfortable teaching the rosy view from the SS manuals as well as those who may not be comfortable broaching topics that may invite those defensive hands in the air you mention.

I think this thread is the first place I uttered the word "Mormon" on this site. Nice.

This is not new, but was reposted today in the Church's newsroom site. I still think Oman's description is the best and commend it to anyone who has not read it.

Here is my summary of the content of the link above:

          1. Not every statement made by a leader past or present is doctrine or intended to be binding.

          2. Doctrine is established by the First Presidency and the 12 and is "consistently proclaimed in official church publications."

          3. This doctrine resides in the standard works and official declarations and proclamations.

          4. Isolated statements are often taken out of context, distorting their original meaning.

          5. Some doctrines are more important than others and a frequent mistake of commentators is to try to take a peripheral teaching and put it at the center.

          6. The fundamental principles of the religion are that Jesus died, was buried and rose on the third day. Everything else is an "appendage."

          7. Prophets get revelation relevant to their day. The area of emphasis in our time is the family.

          8. Mormons heavily emphasize practicing their faith in daily life including in their community and through world wide humanitarian programs.

          9. Individuals should seek their own witness of the truthfulness of church doctrine with the spirit and intellect working together.

          10. Mormons use a unique vocabulary that sometimes leads people to believe there is a disagreement when none exists in reality.
I'm not sure how useful that is in helping people resolve difficult issues, but perhaps in some cases it is.

I feel totally vindicated when it comes to my many dustups through the years on CB concerning "doctrine vs counsel".

You should go over there and rub it in. It seems like the right thing to do.

Don't sell yourself short. It's obvious you've been maturing for a long, long time.

                        So, what is doctrine?

This really clears things up. Clear as mud.

My guess is he left the house in the tweed jacket and didn't realized until that moment how horribly it clashed with his Lorenzo Cana tie.
